Most diets do not work

Most diets leave feeling hungry, weak and disadvantaged. You spread throughout the day with a growling stomach, but eventually cave in and order pizza with extra cheese. Feeling perpetually hunger is the main reason that people abandon their diet.

The diet is too complicated and time consuming to follow. You spend every day of weighing and measuring of food, the calculation of carbohydrates or calories and keeping food diaries. Perhaps this is fun at first, but then it all becomes just a burden. You’re too busy to follow a diet that feels more like a math test.

You feel bad. Many diets cut the essential nutrients, making you feel lethargic, low energy and health-conscious. Is it any wonder people give up?

Why have we become so fat?

About 43% of men and 33% of women are overweight and an additional 22% of men and 23% of women are obese (and these figures are rising all the time). In the last decade the percentage of obese adults has Increased by over 50%. The rate of increase of obesity in children is even worse. So what is happening to us? Why, in a relatively short time, we have gained so much weight?

It’s not like we lack the awareness of weight problems. There are shelves full of books and racks of magazines with cover stories on diets and fitness regimens. The media have Seized upon the ‘epidemic of obesity with a fervor – fat is big news these days.

The response to our collective weight crisis is simple: we are consuming more calories than we are spending, and the surplus is stored around the waist, hips and thighs as fat. (Perhaps it is to find a good place in his arms, too.)
